75 miles while on vacation

I set a goal of 75 miles while on my 3 week vacation and I met it tonight finishing with 75.6 miles. Just barely, but I made it. I would have gone further today but I literally felt like my nose was going to fall off so I did the minimum needed to meet my goal. BRRRRR. Bundle up and go for a run!

1000 miles in 2012? Not quite....

My goal for 2012 was to run 1000 miles. It sounds like a lot but lets break it down to what I would actually have to do to meet this goal.

I would need to average...
83.3 miles per month
19.2 miles per week
2.73 miles per day.

PIECE OF CAKE, right? Wrong. I didn't run enough in any month this year except December to even come close to my goal, let alone meet it. Here are my monthly totals for 2012 along with some notes explaining that month.

January 2012: 45.3
No excuses here. I just didn't run much. But I did supplement my runs with other workouts. I did 3 Spin classes, completed a 10 mile run-bike-run duathlon with my niece, 13 days of 5:30am workouts, and went scuba diving for my birthday. I was working out but didn't make it into the lottery for Way Too Cool 50k so I wasn't running too much. I signed up for Shamrock'n Half marathon, but knew I didn't have to put in huge miles to get ready for that.

February 2012: 61.5
I started uping my miles a little bit to get ready for the half marathon. I still did a few morning workouts but was finding that my IT band was acting up when I ran. Then... SURPRISE, I made it off the waitlist and into my first 50k, Way Too Cool. I had two weeks to get ready. And I was in pain. Greeeeaaat.

March 2012: 41 miles
At this point my IT band and my knees were both very flared up and hurting. I got in a couple painful training runs then somehow hobbled by way through 31 miles in Way Too Cool 50k on March 10th. I've never been in that much physical pain. It was ridiculous but I finished and decided I would take a few weeks off of running.

April 2012: 29.2 miles
I decided not to run again until after we got back from our scuba diving vacation in Cozumel. I wanted to be as painfree as possible on vacation. My first run on April 16th was 5.5 miles, about 3 miles longer than I should have run. I made that my longest run for the month and got in a few other short runs. I was signed up for a marathon on June 3rd and just wanted to be able to finish it without too much pain.

May 2012: 61.9 miles
Jason ran his first 50 miler this month, the Quicksilver 50 in San Jose. I ran 14 miles with his that day. He was amazing! I'm so proud of him for finishing this tough 50 miler on such a hot day.

June 2012: 74.8 miles
I completed the Rock and Roll San Diego marathon with a friend with less pain than I thought I would feel. I spent some more time working out at Guiding Fitness again and did a cleanse with a few friends. I also completed a very fun new race in Auburn called She Rocks the Trails. I was so thankful that I signed up for the 25k and not the 50 k that day because it was over 100 degrees and scorching! We swam in the nice, cold river after the race though so that helped.

July 2012: 51.37
I was disappointed in my numbers that month because I was off work and should have been able to get more in. But we did have an amazing vacation to CoCo View Resort in Roatan, Honduras. We got in 24 dives in 1 week. SO MUCH FUN!!!

August 2012: 49.65 miles
This was a crazy month for me. I went up to Oregon with a friend for the Cascades Lakes relay, a 218 miles relay race. We were down a couple of team members and this was a TOUGH race, but we created some great memories. I got back on August 5th and went back to work on August 6th to get ready for the school year. I started setting up my classroom and on August 10th I found out that I had gotten a new position as a Kindergarten teacher. So.... I had less than 4 days to move classrooms and set up my new classroom for Kindergarten orientation. Those few weeks were crazy and I wasn't able to get much exercising in.

September 2012: 79.55 miles
I was running a little here and there and decided on a whim to sign up for the Sierra Nevada trail marathon on 9/22. I wasn't worried about getting a good time, I just wanted to finish the run. I did, and my time wasn't great. Oh well. I was surprisingly not in much pain though and was able to go out with friends that night.

October 2012: 62.2 miles
I did the Rio Del Lago half marathon on October 6th. It was extremely overpriced... but it got me out and running that day so it was worth the money. The next weekend I headed to San Francisco to do the Nike Women's marathon with a friend. Neither one of us had trained for the marathon so at mile 10, we decided to take a shortcut to the finish line and do the half marathon instead. We got the see the firefighters in tuxedos sooner and our little blue Tiffany's boxes were there waiting for us. We headed out to a very fun bar where I got to be one of the only people to route for the Giants as they played the 49ers in SF.

November 2012: 53.82 miles
Little runs here and there with a few 10/11 milers.

December 2012: 100.15 miles
This was a month long challenge to meet the century mark. I did it!

2012 Year long goal = 1000 miles
2012 Year long total= 712.14 miles

I was nearly 300 miles short... but I felt like a grew a lot as a runner in 2012. I will try very hard to beat this total in 2013 and hit that 1000 mile mark.

Here is a breakdown of the runs that I completed in 2012:
January - New Year's duathlon
February- American Canyon 25k
March- Way Too Cool 50k
April- no races for me, we went to Cozumel and got in a lot of diving though :)
May- Team Lone Tree Community Fun Run (Jason and I took first place for men/women!!)
June- Rock and Roll Marathon in San Diego, She Rocks the Trails 25k
July- no races this month, vacation to Roatan, Honduras.
August- Cascades Lakes Relay in Oregon
September- Sierra Nevade Endurance Runs trail marathon
October- Nike Women's half marathon, Rio Del Lago half marathon
November- no races
December-no races

100 mile December

So I gave myself a 100 mile running goal for December as a means to get some miles under my feet before I start adding distance to my long runs in January and February. 100 miles in a month breaks down to about 25 miles a week or 3.2 miles or so per day. Not too bad at all really, but when you mix holiday parties, Christmas shopping, and a very wet and rainy month of December - it became somewhat challenging to get those mile in.

Here was my mileage for the first two weeks:

Week1
12/3 - 3 miles
12/4 - 6 miles
12/7-  6 miles

Week 1=15 miles

Week 2
12/9 - 13.5 miles
12/11- 4 miles
12/15- 3.5 miles

Week 2=21 miles
Running Total=36 miles

Not too bad for the first two weeks, but I was already behind on my daily mileage to meet my goal. Then week 3 happened and I got even farther behind.....

Week 3
12/16- 10 miles
12/20- 5.1 miles

Week 3= 15.1
Running Total= 51.1 miles

So on December 23rd, with 9 days left in December I had 49 miles to go. I vowed to still meet my goal and here is what the rest of the month looked like.

Week 4
12/24- 6.7 miles
12/25- 4 miles
12/27- 3 miles
12/28- 12 miles

Week 4= 31.2 miles
Running Total=82.3 miles

Week 5
12/30- 8.1 miles
12/31- 9.75

Week 5= 17.85
Running Total=100.15

WHEW! Barely made it! Jason and I went out for a run on New Year's Eve and I just squeezed in the last few miles to meet my goal. But I made it!!!!
